Why We Need Amazon

by Steven Washer on February 3, 2015

S3-thumb-225Everyone says you need Amazon S3. Everyone is right. But not for any reason they’ve ever expressed.

I still don’t know for the life of me why no one is talking about this. Maybe mass marketing really is such a powerful force that it overcomes rational thought in all but a remnant.

Thing is, practically the only people we speak to are those who know in their heart of hearts that they are the remnant. So that’s fine with me. 🙂

Here’s the crux of it. Do you want to have a significant presence online with your ideas expressed on video?

Then just watch this one. It’s the real reason for Amazon, and exactly what you should do next to set the stage for your message being received.

Yes, this is the YouTube version of the video. To find out why, tune in next week…

Hey Steve,

Great video as always, and I love the background — looks terrific!

Is this software you’ve used to add the different images to the background?

Re amazon S3, I’ve had my account for about 4-5 years, and it costs me 13c per month — not bad for hosting a bunch of my videos I put up there a few years back 🙂

I haven’t used it for a couple of years, and your new video is timely — I’d love to have more control over my video content (while I’m still using the other online sites like Youtube and Vimeo), and am keen to know what you recommend as the Settings (how to make private, course content, public etc), and the Video Player you talk about.

Can’t wait for the next episode 🙂

Thanks so much for backing up my claims about the pricing. I realized later that it might have sounded too good to be true. 🙂

Yes, it’s software that adds the background. Final Cut Pro.

And yes, there’s much more coming next time. I think this is mucho important.

Great video. How did you do the background image? That is exactly what I have been looking for.

Thanks
Bob

It’s really just layers. Bought the room image, then used a fairly simple series of filters in Final Cut Pro to make it a proper background, then bought a bunch of other images to make the slide show. Then used another series of filters on those images to make the perspective more or less correct. The effect you don’t see is the biggest one, and the one that makes the room work. It’s the finishing filter used on myself so that the whole scene works together. Similar filters can be bought for a Windows editing program other than Windows Movie Maker.

Thanks for this video.

Why do you say “Never buy views on Youtube ? ”

Thanks

Thanks, Steven! Just wondering what player you recommend? EVS? Or is that in the next video? Or maybe you have a surprise for us!
Thanks!

Thanks for asking, Mike. This needs just a little more background before I start making recommendations. One or two more videos should do it.

And yes, I think there will be at least one surprise along the way. 🙂

Thanks, Steve…. great explanation of S3. (I knew all of that..but your promised subject matter for your next S3 video is much anticipated, and I’m sure will be very helpful…exactly what I need.)

Let’s see if I can guess how you did your background scene in today’s video: you created it in PowerPoint, adding the pop-in’s as a new slide, then loaded them into your video editor, recorded your on-camera narrative and chroma-keyed it over your background slides….changing them on-cue. The slides you had actually created first in Photoshop (where you could have added the perspective). Actually, (come to think of it….) you wouldn’t have needed to even use PowerPoint; you could have just imported the Photoshop slides into your video editor and edited them on-cue behind your chroma-keyed on-camera layer.

How close am I?

I got my short video up on my YouTube channel yesterday:

Mel, your second guess was very close. I edited the images and videos behind the room layer, which was also behind me.

Hm. You’re making me give away all my secrets here! 🙂

Nice video, Steve. Thank you!

I too have a neglected S3 account, although it is auto set for a few Wordpress blog back ups.

I’ve seen a few courses that advocate using YouTube videos set on private listings for their information products. I’d like to know what S3 player(s) you recommend.

Do you mean unlisted (as opposed to private) for information products? Not many would be able to see the videos if they were private. They’d have to have YouTube accounts and be subscribed.

Anyway, lots more on the way, including recommendations…

Steve, you are a wonderful presenter — humorous, knowledgeable and trustworthy.

You might want to know that Marsha Stopa, a team member for Jon Morrow’s Serious Bloggers Only membership site, mentioned you as a example of where to go to learn online video during their webinar today.

Keep up the good work!
